Dr. Sabrina M Elias, Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at the School of Life
Sciences at IUB, recently participated and won the first prize in a lightning talk competition for
students and early career research scientists at the 6 th Annual South Asian Biosafety conference
organized by the ILSI Research Foundation and Biotech Consortium India Limited, under the
auspices of the South Asia Biosafety Program. The talk, entitled “Blending Gene Expression with
Phenomics to Decipher Salt Tolerance Determinant,” was based on work that she had
conducted at the University of Dhaka, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the University of
Texas at Austin as part of her PhD. Participants in the lightning round were chosen based on an
evaluation of the abstracts submitted, and were required to conduct their talks in five minutes.
The conference took place at The Westin from 15 th to 17 th September 2018. This conference is
the premier biosafety meeting in South Asia and provides an essential forum to hear from
leading scientists representing regulatory agencies, public sector research institutions and the
private sector in South Asia and internationally. Along with the lightning talk competition, there
was a plenary session on specified topics, workshops, and poster presentations.
