Dept. of Life Sciences Hosts Harvard Professor Edward T. Ryan

The School of Life Sciences at IUB hosted global infectious diseases expert Dr. Edward T. Ryan on March 13th, 2016. Ornob Alam, Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences, introduced the speaker. Beginning with its importance to Bengal, Dr. Ryan spoke on the history of cholera, focusing on the major pandemics of the disease in the past. He described how the response to cholera shaped new practices in public health and experimental science, and elaborated on its present status.

Vice Chancellor Professor M. Omar Rahman, in his remarks, talked about the impact of cholera in Bangladesh. Dr. Rita Yusuf, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, delivered the formal vote of thanks, and spoke briefly on factors which make South Asian countries particularly vulnerable to the disease and promising new molecular strategies being investigated.

Faculty members, students, and guests from ICDDR,B and Dhaka University, among others, attended the event.
